The Hotel is perfectly located centrally for day trips around the Highlands and we have listed below just a few of the places to visit whilst staying at the Hotel - All of the attractions below are within easy reach of the Hotel for half day or day trips and are all things that the Hotel owners do themselves and are personally recommended because they are excellent and are things we like to do ourselves when we get time off - local knowledge !

The Isle of Skye & The Road to Skye 

This is perhaps the most beautiful road that you will ever travel on in Scotland, winding its way through the great mountain passes of the western highlands, past the Five Sisters of Kintail with tremendous views towards the Cuillin Mountains of Skye. Stop 5 miles outside of Invergarry at the viewpoint to see Loch Garry – famously nicknamed the “map of Scotland.” - this is the main picture at the top of our website page

The Eilean Donan Castle – perhaps the most photographed and beautiful castle in Scotland used in the famous Highlander movie. Worth stopping here en-route to Skye for coffee, cakes and a tour of the castle.

Plockton – a beautiful small fishing village with little craft shops, pubs and restaurants.

Applecross – take the adventurous road over the Breachan Pass, a great bikers road that twists and turns over the mountains with panoramic views over Skye and the Western Isles. Take lunch at the Applecross Inn – great seafood !

On the Isle of Skye – good places to visit include :

Talisker Distillery, take a tour and taste – its a nice well looked after place with a good Highland Dram !  

Dunvegan Castle which is definitely worth walking round and looking through the gardens – more rustic than Eileen Donan and gives you a feel of how life was.

Cuillin Mountain Range - a must visit, rugged and wild mountains

Take the road to Armadale and drop into Claire Macdonald’s Hotel called “Kinloch Lodge” for a beautiful afternoon tea ! 

Take the car ferry across to Mallaig if you fancy driving the loop and round to Fort William – ferries every hour in peak season

Ben Nevis, The Nevis Range and Aanoch Mor are a must however take a walk or drive down Glen Nevis and have lunch at the rustic Ben Nevis Inn – great place and good ales !

Gondola Ride up the side of Ben Nevis – there is a cafe and restaurant at the top and if its a clear day – its simply stunning up there. Ben Nevis Whisky Distillery in Fort William is far better than it appears outside & the people are very friendly indeed – worth a visit for sure.

From Fort William take the Jacobite Steam Train used on ‘Harry Potter’ to Mallaig. Book early to avoid disappointment. Beautiful scenery ands you get 2 hours to potter around Mallaig and grab some lunch before the return journey – great for kids. The drive across to Mallaig is very beautiful – stop at Glenfinnan as its simply stunning and grab a coffee at the cafe there.

If it’s sunny - which happens more than you realise a day on the Beach can be spent on the Silver sands of Morar -just before Mallaig branch off to Moray and see some beautiful white beaches if you fancy a paddle.

Ardnamurchan & Isle of Mull is a stunning day out and a hidden treasure of the Highlands. Drive across to Kilchoan and leave your car taking the passenger ferry to Mull. Great fun and lands in Tobermory which is from the kids programme “Balamory.” Great shops, pubs, food places, Tobermory Distillery which is the friendliest in Scotland and also a chocolate shop !

Enjoy the stunning scenery of Ballachulish & Learn to Rock or Ice Climb in Kinlochleven – great facility !

A drive along Loch Ness & a walk in Glen Affric – perhaps the most beautiful Glen in Scotland and a hidden gem known by few. Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness is great and a must visit, though beware as it gets very busy with tourists.

Take a drive to Spean Bridge, hang a left and across to Newtonmore – lovely drive and passes the Estate used in the Monarch of the Glen TV programme. If you go onto Aviemore have lunch in the Mountain Café – the pancake stack is to die for and the milkshakes are heaven !

Walks from the Hotel

From the Hotel there are lots of walks:

Try the beautiful River walks through the village along to Glengarry Forest Walks. Search out the waterfalls within the forest at Glengarry and experience a magical, mystical forest walk.

Ben Tee (mountain of the fairies) is within easy reach of the Hotel if you fancy a hike up a mountain, this one is a Corbett.

Track up behind the Hotel along the Great Glen Way towards Fort Augustus for beautiful views of the village and Ben Tee.

Keep an eye out for Red Squirrels on the Hotel grounds and Pine Martins can be spotted most evenings at dusk at the rear of the Hotel if you are quiet.
